The Victorinox Swiss Army knife has been a brand name the world has trusted for 125 years, and that's quality you can trust. The first time it was registered was 6-12-1897, and the company was founded by Carl Elsener. Did you know that there are over 34,000 of these knives that leave the factory in Switzerland every single day? Most of these - about 90% in fact - are exported around the world. The knife gets its name from the fact that - you guessed it - the Swiss army recruits receive upon entering the army. (Yes, the Swiss have an army!)
What's the big deal about these knives? First off, the history is a rich tale involving some rather industrious forward-thinking business minds, especially that of Carl Elsener. At a time where the industrial revolution had barely begun, Carl took a chance and decided he'd help put a stop to unemployment by providing jobs at the plant. He also was one of the first to make that flying leap into progress by moving the hand-crafted production into a fully-blown industrial system, at a time when such a move was a bona fide risk. Thank goodness he did!
Now, you can count on the over 100 Swiss Army knife models to be at the ready in a pinch when you need them most. If you happen to live on the moon - good luck! - no worries, NASA takes the knives with them when they fly missions. If you happen to go to White House, don't be surprised to receive one for a parting gift from the President. If you happen to be on top of Mt. Everest - guess what? The knives have made it there, too, saving lives and saving headaches one tool at a time.
With over a hundred models to choose from, it may be daunting to think of the right fit. No worries, their website has a "tool match" app that will allow you to find the right fit. What if you break it? What then? Well, first off - they aren't "cheap," but they're also affordable! Many knives can be found in the $20-$100 range, with models ranging up to thousands of dollars - if you were one of the lucky few to buy their collector's gold, platinum and silver models earlier this year (2009-for the 125th anniversary). Secondly, if you do happen to break a blade or tool, Victorinox has a great warranty system on all their products.
You'll love your knife, no matter which model you wind up with. Every kid inside of us wants one - just in case!
