You many wonder what exactly are mace spray. It is similar to pepper spray. It is usually contained as an aerosol spray, such as pepper spray. Inside the aerosol it often contains a form of tear gas, or OC pepper which is also found in pepper sprays. The tear gas contains chemicals known as lachrymators which produce tearing in the eyes.
When an attacker is sprayed, the effects are different for each person. Many who have had mace on them have said it feels like being set on fire. If the mace is inhaled it can cause the person to feel like they are suffocating. It can also instantly shut the attacker's eyes, making it easy for the victim to flee from the area. If the attacker is under the influence, it may have minimal affect because tear gas thrives on pain compliance to be effective.
When owning mace, remember to practice. You need to be aware of how it to activate it quickly in case of a real situation where it is needed. Outside is a great area to test spray. Figure which way the wind is blowing and stand upwind from the direction that you are spraying. Try to not use too much, since every time you test it, you are diminishing the amount you are carrying around for protection. It is wise to test spray every 3 months to make sure it is accurately working. Check the expiration date and make sure to change when need be.
