This is almost like bluffing in a game of poker or any other game, what I like is you don't loose either way as long as you dont go over the bid amount that you are guessing the item is worth in your mind.
Another strategy for winning auctions online and offline is to know exactly how much you either want for your item or how much you are willing to spend in order to get the item that you desire to receive. This is another great element to keep in mind, the big lesson that I personally learned from ebay is that you have to start the bids out at the minimum that you will expect to receive out of the product.
Don't start your bids out to low or to high, evay charges fees like crazy to if I were you I would cook the price that I want for the item and all of the little ebay fees in the final price in order to get the most out of my money as possible.
