How the AcrySof ReSTOR Lens Procedure Works
Lens replacement with the AcrySof ReSTOR® lens is done on an outpatient basis, and takes just a few hours, including recovery time. The AcrySof ReSTOR® lens procedure surgically replaces your natural but clouded crystalline lens with the ReSTOR lens, designed using apodized diffractive and refractive technologies.
The AcrySof ReSTOR® Lens Procedure
The most current advancement for cataract treatment is small incision cataract surgery. Your ophthalmologist will cut a small slit near the edge of your cornea. During the AcrySof ReSTOR® lens procedure a small tool through the slit that will break up the lens tissue and vacuum it out. He inserts the AcrySof ReSTOR® lens through the slit in a folded state. Once he has it in place, he unfolds it and implants it within the muscles that control the crystalline lens.
Apodized Diffraction
The AcrySof ReSTOR® is designed using “apodized diffraction,†Alcon’s patented design which they define as, “The gradual reduction or blending of the diffractive step heights.†Diffraction occurs as the light passes through these step heights, directing the light to multiple focal points associated with distance ranges.
The diffractive steps taper from the center of the lens to the outer edge in concentric circles, creating a smooth transition between distant to intermediate vision, and intermediate to near vision zones. Accommodation is mimicked by way of these multiple focal points and the result is focused distant, intermediate, and near vision with a single lens.
Refraction
Refractive technology redirects light as it passes through the lens to the retina. This technology is applied to the distance vision area located in the outer ring of the AcrySof ReSTOR® lens. It surrounds the apodized diffractive rings, blending with them, to complete the near to distant focal transition.
New Developments
Alcon has marketed the AcrySof ReSTOR® IOL since March 2005 when it was first approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Millions of patients have enjoyed clear vision with this lens, and most haven’t needed to use reading glasses. To address the needs of patients whose near vision is not as fully corrected as they would like, Alcon’s improved version of this lens was FDA approved in 2008. The new lens significantly improves near vision, but with less emphasis on intermediate focal ranges.
