Ways to Protect Yourself on the Road This Winter
Winter weather usually equates to wet and slippery roads – whether it's due to rain, snow, or ice. With slick road conditions, driving is inevitably more dangerous during the winter months. However, there are ways to practice extra caution while driving on the roads this winter.
To begin it's always a good idea to get your car serviced at the beginning of winter, as well as before any major road trips during the winter months. You'll want to have your anti-freeze tested, check that your lights are working for optimal visibility in winter conditions, and ensure your battery is fully charged. Good tyre conditions - such as adequate tyre depth and correct tyre pressure - are also vital to keep you from skidding. Finally, in preparing you vehicle for winter driving, it's wise to carry a set of equipment in your car boot at all times, in case you should experience any problems on the road. Some of these include: extra fuel, a spare tyre and tyre weld, jump leads, a torch, a First Aid equipment, and de-icing equipment.
Once your vehicle is prepared for winter road conditions, you'll also want to practice some important safety precautions while driving. For instance, use dipped headlights in hail, heavy snow, or rain, as all conditions significantly reduce visibility. You might also need to reduce your speed below the speed limit, depending on how severe conditions are.
Fog is one of the most dangerous winter weather conditions, particularly when it's paired with icy and slippery road conditions. It's a good idea to avoid driving in fog altogether, unless your journey is necessary. However, if driving can't be avoided, ensure you follow some important guidelines for road safety. Allow more room than usual between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you, and ensure you're able to stop in the distance you can see. You might also consider switching off your radio or music, and opening your window slightly so that you can listen for traffic – particularly at crossroads and junctions. If your vehicle experiences problems on the road, call for help and ensure your hazard lights are turned on. If you get stuck in a snowdrift, try moving forward and backward using the highest gear you can.
Finally, one of the smartest precautions regarding winter driving is ensuring you have a comprehensive car insurance policy in place. It's also a good idea to familiarise yourself with how to make road traffic accident claims, in case you're injured in a road accident and need to make a claim. Keeping these few tips in mind will help ensure you're better protected in hazardous road conditions this winter, and for many winters to come.
