Was Political-Correctness to Blame for the Fort Hood Shooting?
Everything seems so clear and obvious in hindsight. As details emerge about the early November shooting at Fort Hood, where Major Nidil Malik Hasan allegedly killed 13 people and wounded 30 more, one is left puzzled as to why the signs of his coming act of violence were not noted by his supervisors and acted upon. How could people have not figured this guy out, and taken action against him?
But then, in hindsight "everything" seems clear and obvious. The real question should be, How many other Hasans are out there right now? In a military as large and diverse as ours, Major Hasan is likely not the only soldier harboring the kind of hatred and resentment to cause this kind of violent action. Perhaps this case will cause people to take a look around them more carefully, and to not allow warning signs to go unheeded.
Hasan did not hide his feelings, he was quite open about them, but he was allowed to get away with things that he probably should not have been allowed to get away with. Why was that? Two factors could be responsible for Hasan not being properly dealt with before he started killing fellow soldiers at Fort Hood:
1. He was a doctor; and
2. He was Muslim.
Often in the military, doctors are looked at as being slightly different than " regular soldiers". They are cut some slack, allowed to be a bit un-military or eccentric. I recall when I was on active duty in the US Air Force as a Medic, we had one physician, a radiologist, who refused to wear a hat. Another, who decided that he would never put on a uniform but only wear scrubs. Several that refused to use any military protocol whatsoever. These doctors flaunted military protocol and got away with things that non-medical personnel never could. For some reason they were treated as "special".
Perhaps that "specialness", along with Hasan being Muslim, and having supervisors that did not want to appear racist or to offend, caused people to not take action.
According to fellow military doctors, Hasan made no secret over the last two and a half years about his growing disenchantment with the Army and the American military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Another question, was Hasan transferred to Fort Hood to get rid of a problem at his previous base where he had been flagged as an performance and attitude problem? As if a change of scenery would make him a model soldier? Perhaps, I have seen that kind of "transfer-intervention" in the military before.
If any good can come of this sad event the Army must take a very close look at Hasan's supervisors and its internal procedures of monitoring mental-health in its soldiers. Hasan's supervisors are the ones that could have prevented this tragedy. They need to be held accountable, and future Army supervisors must not be afraid to act when a soldier begins to exhibit the kind of instability that Hasan did.
