After more than 20 years and almost on a whim, my wife and I decided to return to camping - a pastime we loved when the kids were young. Now they are no longer kids and we fancied giving it another go after years of foreign travel and plush hotels. Would we still like camping?
Within two weeks of buying a new tent we were arriving at a lovely site in Somerset - Homestead Park for those who are interested - ready to spend the next 10 nights there. Crucial to our chances of enjoying the return was our choice of tent. I indulged in a lot of online research and selected a favourite - the Vango Icarus 500. This model is a five berth tent and though the two of us do not need that many berths, we did want the extra space a five berth gives.
The layout is simple enough. The rear half of the tent has the sleeping inner tent, with a divider that can be rolled back if required. We used half for the bedroom and the other half for storage. The main living area at the front is plenty big enough for two people for a weekend - indeed the Icarus is marketed within their "weekender" range. There were plenty of tents available with a similar layout, but what convinced me that it was the one for us was the fact that it has an optional canopy that converts a neat, compact tent suitable for a weekend into a brilliant base for longer periods.
The canopy uses the same materials and poles as the main construction and is very simple to erect. it clips to the main frame for stability and effectively adds an extra 50% of usable space. The finished article looks a little like a large caterpillar in profile. It is effectively a tunnel with the back end closed, a door part way in and the canopy is open to the front but a great side and top cover against an overbearing sun or (more likely in the UK) the wind and rain. We had both during our stay and the Icarus performed very well in all conditions. Inside the canopy we had our kitchen, table and chairs. the weather was good enough on all but one of the evenings to eat in the canopy, only once forcing us to move inside the main living area.
The tent is probably the simplest of any of it's height (I am over 6 feet tall and could easily stand up everywhere except close to the sides) to erect. The makers claim it can be done in 10 minutes. Our first two attempts (in the garden of course!) were timed at 30 minutes and 20 minutes, but we had cracked it by the time we arrived on site. 10 minutes exactly to get the main tent up and operational, albeit without all of the guy lines pegged down. Onto the canopy and another five minutes was used up. Fifteen minutes to erect a tent plus canopy of that size is an excellent statistic than a number of our co-campers were very jealous of!
Vango products have a good name and we added more of their products to our equipment. The kitchen, chairs (La Jolla - so comfortable and well worth the extra cost!) and even their raised airbed all joined our journey and all proved to be excellent purchases.
Over the 10 days we were there, we saw many tents come and go. The site is an adults-only one and the vast majority of campers were couples, like ourselves. We couldn't help check each of them out to see if, on reflection, we would prefer any of their tents over ours. The answer each time was no. Resoundingly.
We had a great time and the investment we have made in tent and equipment was well worthwhile.. The tent helped make it so, of course. For anyone considering a new tent for two, the Vango Icarus 500 should be on your shortlist. And don't forget to add the canopy if you plan on trips longer than just a weekend.
