Under Canvas
There are many kinds of camper. Some hike into the woods or along a river bank, pitch their tent and enjoy getting back to nature, living off the land.
But you don’t have to be so intrepid to enjoy camping. Modern tents have all modern conveniences including a loo, shower and kitchen. If you don’t fancy pitching your own tent, there are campsites with ready-pitched tents, complete will all conveniences.
You can also ‘camp’ on sites with caravans or log cabins although purists might declare that that’s not true camping.
Even if you do decide to go under canvas, you don’t have to rough it. Most modern camp sites have a superb range of facilities from shower block and toilets to fresh water and electricity. Many also cater for children who delight in being out of doors. There’s always something interesting to do and see on a campsite.
Take a Hike
Many people really enjoy getting back to nature and combine camping and hiking. This is a superb way to see the countryside although you do have to carry your home around on your back! Of necessity, this needs to be light enough to carry comfortably and you must also be able to carry all your utensils and equipment with you as well. It is, therefore, a good idea to travel with at least one companion who can share the load.
Of course you don’t need to hike and camp, too. You can simply hike from one location to another staying in a hotel or hostel or even campsites!
Hiking gives you a sense of really getting back to nature. There are hundreds of hiking trails throughout the USA and in many other countries, too. You can also go off trail but you need a good map and a compass - and know how to use them. Many a would-be traveller has got lost and required rescuing.
Going up
Climbing is another great outdoor activity. You don’t have to scale mountains to enjoy the sport. You can climb rocks, boulders, canyons, and indoors nets and climbing walls. There’s a climbing activity to suit everyone whatever their level of expertise and area of interest.
As climbing does involve going up in the world, safety is of paramount importance and you must get proper instruction and guidance before taking this up as a hobby.
Great Explorations
When you think of explorers you may think of people who climb Everest and travel up the Amazon. However, there is much exploration to be done closer to home.
The definition of ‘exploring’ is to search a terrain to gather information, so you can explore local woods and rivers and discover more about the land, the plants and animals that live there and their habitat.
Be Prepared
Whatever form of exploration you do, the most essential requirement is to be properly prepared. That means being trained in the skills you’ll need, being properly clothed for the environment and having suitable tool and accessories that you’ll need on your journey.
Making sure you’re suitably equipped will mean a comfortable and enjoyable trip and, more to the point, a safe one!
